fly fishing
The lodge is perfectly positioned to take on the challenge of the Aeorere
River by the experienced fly fisherman. Your host a professional trout fishing
guide for 30 years (and the holder of the Fenwick Master fisherman's Award) will
be on hand to show you how to get access to this wonderful scenic river.
The Brown trout of this river require the skill of a very experienced fly
caster and a skilled stalker of these fine fighting specimens. The average trout
runs around four pounds with some up to eight.
Nymphing is the technique in most runs, but the evening rise is exciting on
the dry fly. The lodge has a catch and release philosophy. Sea run browns are
found at the river mouth and upstream when the whitebait are running, and take a
wet smelt type fly.
Best months to fish are early December through to end of March.
Our fishing guide Chris Jackson, who is available to guide clients, has
explored and fished this river for 20 years, and released some very large
browns.
This river is rarely fished by locals, and Song of the Tui is the only
accommodation of quality hosting the purest of fly casting anglers.
The river offers 35 kilometers of fishing starting at the Brown Hut of the
Heaphey Track to the mouth at the village of Collingwood.
There are many other trout streams and lakes in this region offering
challenges to the keen explorer of wilderness fishing.
Inflatable rafting is available to drift the river and gain access to places
inaccessible from the river banks..
